ERA Awards FutEra $5 Million to Launch Advanced Geothermal Project in Alberta

FutEra Power Corp. has been awarded up to $5 million from Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) to advance its PowerFlow™ Closed Loop Geothermal pilot in Swan Hills, Alberta—a $12 million project that builds on the success of Canada’s first geothermal co‑production power facility, commissioned by FutEra in 2022. Scheduled to begin engineering in early 2026 with operations targeted for late 2026 or early 2027, the pilot will include Alberta’s first large‑bore geothermal well and aims to demonstrate how advanced geothermal systems can repurpose existing oil and gas infrastructure to deliver scalable, zero‑emission heat and power. Leadership from FutEra and ERA emphasize the project’s role in reducing emissions, driving clean‑energy innovation, and establishing geothermal as the “renewable cousin of oil and gas,” reinforcing Alberta’s position in emerging geothermal development.

FutEra’s project leverages Alberta’s expertise to turn end-of-life oil and gas wells into zero-emission electricity and heat. By repurposing existing infrastructure, it cuts methane emissions, avoids new environmental impacts, and demonstrates how current assets can deliver clean, scalable energy and skilled jobs for Albertans.”
