Waking the Giant: Lisa Mueller on FutEra’s Bold Geothermal Vision
In the heart of Alberta’s energy landscape, FutEra Power is rewriting the rules of renewable energy. At the helm is CEO Lisa Mueller, a veteran of Canada’s oil patch who’s now leading the charge to unlock geothermal’s vast potential.
“Albertans are really good at a bunch of things,” Mueller told Canada’s National Observer. “But nothing more so than the business of drilling wells.” That expertise, honed through decades of oil and gas exploration, is now being redirected toward a cleaner future—one powered by the heat beneath our feet.
Mueller calls geothermal “the renewable cousin to oil and gas,” a practical adaptation that leverages Alberta’s world-class industrial capabilities. Under her leadership, FutEra launched the Swan Hills project—a pioneering 21 MW hybrid geothermal–natural gas facility northwest of Edmonton. Operational since 2023, it’s the first of its kind in Canada.
As FutEra continues to innovate, Lisa Mueller’s vision is clear: use what Alberta does best to build what Canada needs most—a resilient, renewable energy future.
