Breathing new life into legacy assets

  • FutEra is currently operating the Swan Hills co-produced geothermal and natural gas hybrid power project, which features a grid connection capable of delivering up to 21 MW of combined geothermal heat and natural gas generation.

  • The project achieves measurable greenhouse gas reductions and generates revenue through green attributes such as carbon pricing.

  • By repurposing existing infrastructure with no new land footprint, FutEra has accelerated construction and optimized capital efficiency, while its scalable “design one, build many” approach enables continuous improvement and replication across other assets.

Leveraging Existing Data & Infrastructure

  • Security of heat supply validated by 60 years of reservoir and production data

  • Surface wellhead temperatures can be in excess of 110 degrees Celsius

  • Large existing facility eliminates the need for a new site – no new footprint

Government Support and Partnerships

Geothermal clean technology is a natural and growing fit for Alberta. This project is paving the way for commercial geothermal co-production use across Western Canada. The expertise and experience gained will also open opportunities for Alberta-based know-how around the world.

— Laura Kilcrease, CEO, Alberta Innovates

Alberta is positioned to attract investment in this emerging industry with a natural geographical advantage, leadership in drilling technology, and extensive oil and gas expertise.

Developing geothermal energy could promote economic development in municipalities and help enhance energy and community resiliency for First Nations, Metis Settlements and other Métis groups.

There is also potential for co-production with oil and gas development as well as repurposing inactive oil and gas well infrastructure, which could facilitate investment while limiting land impacts.
